Arduino Robot launches at Maker Faire, we go hands-on (video)

Arduino Robot launches at Maker Faire, we go handson video

There’s a new kid on the Arduino block, and it’s called the Arduino Robot. Launched yesterday at Maker Faire Bay Area, it’s the company’s first product that extends beyond single microcontroller boards. The Roomba-like design, which we first saw in November 2011, is the result of a collaboration with Complubot. It consists of two circular boards, each equipped with Atmel‘s ubiquitous ATmega32u4 and connected via ribbon cable.

The bottom board is home to four AA batteries (NiMH), a pair of motors and wheels, a power connector and switch plus some infrared sensors. By default it’s programmed to drive the motors and manage power. The top board features a color LCD, a microSD card slot, an EEPROM, a speaker, a compass, a knob plus some buttons and LEDs. It’s programmed to control the display and handle I/O. Everything fits inside a space that’s about 10cm high and 19cm in diameter.

Pre-soldered connectors and prototyping areas on each board make it easier to customize the robot platform with additional sensors and electronics. It even comes with eleven step-by-step projects and a helpful GUI right out of the box. The Arduino Robot is now on sale at the Maker Faire for $275 and will be available online in July. Take a look at our gallery below and watch our video interview with Arduino founder Massimo Banzi after the break.

Leaked Android Music app images and hands-on review

Android Music player

This morning, an updated version of the stock Android Music app was leaked along with a new version of Android Market. The new Music app, which is labeled ‘version 3′, is similar to the leaked build from December, but it has received a ton of polish — and indeed, it looks almost ready for prime time.

If you don’t have Android 2.3 — or don’t want to root your phone to install the leaked Music app — take a look through our gallery, and then read on for our initial hands-on impressions.

Amtrak boosts WiFi on select trains, more upgrades coming this summer

There are plenty of wonderful things about train travel: the leg room, the scenery, the lack of security pat-downs. The WiFi, on the other hand, has long been the slowest thing about Amtrak. The company announced today that it’s finally doing something about its frustratingly sluggish service, upgrading wireless on select trains, including the Acela express between Boston and Washington DC and a few California lines like the Capitol Corridor, Pacific Surfliner and San Joaquin. Travelers to other destinations will have to wait a bit longer for quicker load times — Amtrak has promised that the rest of its WiFi-equipped trains will be upgraded by “late summer.”

In-app payment support arrives on Android

Right on cue, Google has launched in-app payment support for Android applications. Developer testing began last week, and now many popular apps — like the ones pictured above — can begin charging users for add-on functionality, content, or whatever the heck else they feel is worthy of additional bits of your pocket change. If you were wondering, Google will take the same 30% cut that Apple takes from in-app purchases.

At last we can buy individual issues in Comics with minimal fuss!

Cueboy Quest is an adorable 8-bit style physics game

cueboyquest

Yes, that’s right, I said adorable. Because Cueboy Quest really is!

You play an 8-bit cowboy whose goal on each level is to get to the door (and thus to the next level), but the door is often locked. To get it to open, you must shoot at one or more targets, and those targets aren’t always in your line of sight. For example, on one level the the target is a balloon which is stuck all the way at the other end of the screen. You must first nudge it free, and then watch it float up and try to shoot it before it floats clear off the screen. Your bullets are chunky pixels that have some weight – the have arcing trajectories, so you don’t always hit exactly where you aim.

There’s another level where you must jump on the balloon as it floats up, use it as a platform to get to the other end of the screen, and then turn to shoot it very quickly before it flies away. Each level is very short, and most of them are quite easy. And not only are the graphics 8-bit blocky, but they’re large too. Simply beautiful!

HP brings Android to laptops with SlateBook X2

Hewlett-Packard has given the “Android treatment” to its latest laptop-tablet hybrid, which is called SlateBook X2 and has a detachable 10-inch screen that can independently function as a tablet.

The X2 is HP’s second device with Android. Its first was the US$170 Slate 7 tablet that started shipping in late April. The SlateBook X2 includes the tablet and keyboard dock as a package, and the tablet cannot be bought separately.

HP on Wednesday also introduced the Split X2, a Windows 8 hybrid laptop with a 13.3-inch detachable screen that can be used as a tablet.

The SlateBook X2 is priced at $479.99 and the Split X2 starts at $799.99. The hybrids will become available in the U.S. in August. HP declined to comment on worldwide availability.

Corel releases VideoStudio Pro X4, we go hands on (video)

videostudioprox4

Corel seems to be on a roll lately; after releasing WinZip System Utilities just last week, this morning the company announced VideoStudio Pro X4.

VideoStudio Pro is aimed at home users and small business professionals who want to create professional-looking videos, but without the hassle, steep learning curve and price of Adobe Premiere Pro and the likes.

This new version introduces several features:

  • Stop motion animation: You can now capture still frames using a webcam, camcorder or DSLR and use them to produce an animation. Tools such as “onion skin view” let you compare the previous image in the sequence with the current one and make the animation as smooth as possible.
  • Processor optimization: Corel says the app is optimized for Intel’s new Sandy Bridge systems, and have shown us some graphs with very impressive numbers. We’ve been unable to test this particular point, but if you have a recent-generation Intel or AMD Fusion system, VideoStudio performance should be blazing. Even on our older test system performance was quite impressive.
  • Customizable workspace: You can drag the video preview window to your secondary monitor (if you have one) and tweak just about any other element in the window layout. Once done, you can save your ideal workspace in one of three slots.
  • Share-to-Web: VideoStudio Pro X4 hooks directly into YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook and Flickr, so you don’t even have to launch a browser to upload your final product. Edit, produce and share from within the app itself.
  • Smart Package: Video projects typically consist of many files; Smart Package lets you bundle all video assets for a given project into one ZIP file which you can password-protect and keep in a safe place once you’re done editing.

I’ve had a chance to play around with a pre-release version for a few days, and have put it through its paces editing a short video for my day job. Overall, I’ve been impressed with how easy it was to create pro-looking results. If you do any sort of video editing but are leery of the investment other apps require (both in dollars and effort), VideoStudio Pro is well worth checking out. To see a bit of the interface itself and what the app can do, watch the video after the jump.

Note: We’ll be running a give-away of ten VideoStudio Pro X4 licenses later today, each worth $100 USD. Keep your eyes peeled for the giveaway post!

How to find out where you can see your favorite movie

The TV Guide Watchlist

Recently, the conversation turned to POW movies, which inevitably got me talking about “Stalag 17,” the classic that inspired the (inferior) TV series “Hogan’s Heroes.”

I hadn’t seen the film in years, but now, with it at the forefront of my mind, I was dying for a screening. Indeed, I thought even my kids were old enough to enjoy it, what with its great blend of humor, mystery, and suspense.

Ah, but where could I find it? I needed to know if and when it might be showing on cable, or, failing that, where I could stream it.

First stop: The TV Guide Watchlist. After you sign up for a free account and specify your local TV provider, you can add any movie to immediately find out when and where it’s available: TV, streaming, DVD, etc.

Google-built media player hits the FCC, reveals only a Hitchhiker’s Guide reference

Googlebuilt media streamer hits the FCC, reveals only a Hitchhiker's Guide reference

With much of its information obscured it’s hard to say what Google has planned for this new device revealed by its FCC filing, but the model number at least indicates someone has a sense of humor. Called an “H840 device” and rocking the model number H2G2-42 (Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy – 42, the ultimate answer to the question of life, the universe and everything) it has WiFi of the 802.11 b/g/n varieties, but that’s all we know for sure. The natural question is whether this is a proper revamp of / follow up to the failed Nexus Q project, particularly with its appearance coming so closely after the unveiling of its Google Play Music All Access subscription. Of course, Google has no shortage of mysterious device projects in store, we’re hopeful this one will reveal all of its secrets soon.

The World’s Fastest Wi-Fi Puts Your Sluggish Router to Shame

For the most part, we’re all happy if we can get Internet that’s fast enough to stream some HD video. But faster is always better, and a new, world-record setting network developed in Germany is so blazing fast you wouldn’t know what to do with it. It can deliver multiple HD films in a second.

Developed by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany, the new 40Gbps Wi-Fi (40x faster than Google Fiber) not only managed to nail crazy speeds, but also did it over a distance of .6 miles. The catch is that it’d never work well in your house.

The jump in speed and distance is not only thanks to state-of-the-art hardware, but a higher frequency (240GHz) than your typical Wi-Fi setup uses (2.4GHz or 5 GHz). This space seems to be a sweet spot for non-interference, letting signals dash across the air pretty easily, but a frequency so high would be very very easily thwarted by the common wall. And here in the States, the FCC might have something to say about it.

The network was tested by beaming data from the top of one skyscraper to another, and chances are this kind of "invisible fiber" connection would be its biggest application, as opposed to your home Wi-Fi. Still, it could be super useful for ‘net distribution in rural area’s where fiber’s an expensive proposition with little pay off. Now if only they could roll out this tech as fast as it can transfer data. [Karlsruhe Institute of Technology via Discovery]

Dell Project Ophelia USB Android stick to ship in July, priced at $100

Dell Ophelia USB Android stick to ship in July, priced at $100

We know that “wherefore art thou?” was about Romeo, but if your question was for (Dell’s) Ophelia, then it’s likely more “when art thou.” The answer? July. The Android pendrive / USB computer we saw back at CES may be one of many, but distinctive thanks to its mainstream PC-maker origins. We’re still lacking a lot of the specifics, other than that there’s WiFi, Bluetooth, Wyse PocketCloud integration, plus, of course, HDMI and Android 4.something. There will likely be a few enterprise-friendly features too (administration tools, remote wiping) reports PC World. As usual, developers will get their hands on them first, with — interestingly — some cable and telecoms companies potentially stocking it too — though no specifics at this time. So, the $100 Dell might not be the portable you’d love for this price, but maybe the USB PC finally crossing over?

Microsoft, Yahoo, AOL Partner on Advertising

In a bid to counter some of the Internet’s larger ad giants–most notably Google and Facebook–Microsoft has joined in an advertising partnership with AOL and Yahoo.

However, Microsoft isn’t framing the agreement as a response to its competitors in that arena. “Other players in the industry are welcome to join us,” Rik van der Kooi, corporate vice president of Microsoft Advertising Business Group, told Reuters Nov. 8. “This is not in response to anybody in particular.”

Under the terms of the agreement, each of the three companies can sell premium display ads belonging to the other two. That will allow the trifecta to more efficiently unload premium advertising inventory, although their competition over advertiser spending and other segments will continue apace.

Facebook and Google continue to battle for their own significant shares of the online advertising pie. Although Microsoft’s product portfolio gives it diverse streams of revenue (in contrast to Google, for example, which depends on advertising for an overwhelming percentage of its bottom line), its recent emphasis on Web and cloud services makes advertising a more prominent concern. Greater ad revenues would also allow Microsoft to absorb some of the massive losses its online division accrues on a quarterly basis.

Microsoft is already in partnership with Facebook. A number of the latter’s features, including the “Like” button, feed social data into Bing, Microsoft’s search engine. That wouldn’t stop Microsoft from making a more aggressive play for the same advertising-dollar pool that feeds Facebook, of course, and nor would that stop AOL or Yahoo, which presumably view Facebook as more of an existential threat.

Foxconn factories are making progress, but working hours still exceed Chinese laws

Employees at the Chinese factories of Apple supplier Foxconn continue to work beyond the country’s legal limit of 49 hours a month, according to a report from the Fair Labor Association (FLA). But the Taiwanese manufacturer is making overall steady progress in improving the working conditions at a select group of factories in China, it said.

The report released Thursday is the latest audit from the FLA, which has been tasked by Apple to monitor the working conditions at three Foxconn factories in the Chinese cities of Shenzhen and Chengdu that produce iPad and iPhone products. Since the initial audits were carried out in February last year, the factories have instituted new changes, including enforcing breaks for workers and stopping student interns from logging overtime hours.

foxconn zhengzhoIDGNS

Foxconn has made ”significant progress” in reducing employee working time to 60 hours per week, or what Apple demands in its own labor code, according to the audit. Workers at two of the three factories in China logged between 40 and 60 hours per week. At the other factory, the working time for employees was largely the same, except for three weeks in September and October, where the hours ranged between 40 and 70 per week.

The manufacturer has yet to cut down employee work time to 49 hours per week, a goal the company wants to reach by July of this year. Chinese labor laws limit working hours to only 40 per week, plus an additional 9 hours for overtime.

Bitcoin finding its feet at first Silicon Valley conference

Bitcoin is growing up. The virtual currency that caught the public’s attention last month when its value zoomed briefly past US$200 kicked off its first Silicon Valley conference Friday evening and shows no sign of losing momentum.

The event is small by Silicon Valley standards, with about 1,000 attendees expected and 19 exhibitors, but it’s bustling with startups launching new exchanges, software developers looking to strengthen the Bitcoin network, and venture capitalists seeking places to invest.

There’s now $45 million a day being traded on the Bitcoin network, or $16 billion a year, according Peter Vessenes, chairman of the Bitcoin Foundation, who talked at the start of the event in San Jose, California.

The volume of activity is accelerating, he said. There have been 18 million transactions in the four years since bitcoins were introduced, and the figure is expected to reach 20 million next month.

University of Glasgow makes 3D models with single-pixel sensors, skips the cameras (video)

University of Glasgow creates 3D with singlepixel sensors, skips the cameras video

Most approaches to capturing 3D models of real-world objects involve multiple cameras that are rarely cheap, and are sometimes tricky to calibrate. The University of Glasgow has developed a method that ditches those cameras altogether. Its system has four single-pixel sensors stitching together a 3D image based on the reflected intensity of light patterns cast by a projector. Reducing the pixel count lowers the cost per sensor to just a few dollars, and extends the sensitivity as far as terahertz wavelengths. Real-world products are still a long way off, but the university sees its invention as useful for cancer detection and other noble pursuits. Us? We’d probably just waste it on creating uncanny facsimiles of ourselves.

Alleged tech support scammers settle FTC charges

Operators of two alleged tech support scams that charged consumers hundreds of dollars to supposedly fix their computers have settled charges from the U.S. Federal Trade Commission.

Mikael Marczak, doing business as Virtual PC Solutions, and Sanjay Agarwalla were among the subjects of six complaints the FTC filed against alleged tech support scams last September.

Under settlements announced by the FTC Friday, the two are prohibited from marketing or selling any computer technical support service. Marczak and his company, Conquest Audit, also are prohibited from marketing or selling debt relief services, the FTC said in a press release. Neither of the men admitted wrongdoing under terms of the settlement.

The settlement with Agarwalla requires him to pay $3000, the amount of money he received in the alleged scam operation, the FTC said. The final order against Marczak and Conquest Audit includes a $984,721 judgment, the total amount of money lost by consumers in the scams, but the order is stayed due to their inability to pay, the agency said.

Tasty Planet is a fun flash game where you eat everything in sight

tastyplanet

So this professor comes up with a new toilet cleaner that works by “eating” the dirt; or so he thinks. That’s how the plot starts for Tasty Planet. You play the role of the toilet cleaner, but you’re not really a toilet cleaner after all — you’re a blob of gray goo that can eat anything that’s smaller than yourself.

As you chomp away, you grow — and as you grow, you can eat bigger and bigger stuff. The first level pits you against microscopic particles; by the time I stopped playing, I got all the way to eating cats and dogs. I know that sounds disturbing, but it’s a really cute game, and there’s no gore or anything like that.

Supposedly you keep growing and growing until you’re able to eat whole planets (hence the name). The challenge factor comes when you realize you can’t touch any critter larger than yourself – you’ll get “bitten” and become smaller. In the beginning you’re so small, that a single touch can kill you. Later on, you’re big enough that touching larger animals doesn’t kill you on the spot, but it does reduce your size. Each level is timed, so if you’re not large enough by the time your clock runs out, you need to start again. As long as you don’t touch the larger animals, you should be fine.

All in all, a fun, addictive little game. It’s available for iOS, too.

Firefox 22 beta enables WebRTC by default, HiDPI displays on Windows

Firefox 22 beta enables WebRTC by default, HiDPI displays on Windows

Though Mozilla has long been a proponent of WebRTC for plugin-free video and voice chat, it hasn’t been ready to enable the full protocol in Firefox as a matter of course. It’s more confident as of this week: the newly available Firefox 22 beta turns on complete WebRTC use by default, allowing for both live web conversations and peer-to-peer file swaps. There’s more to the release as well, depending on the platform. Windows users receive support for HiDPI displays, like that of the Kirabook; every desktop user also gets gaming-friendly OdinMonkey JavaScript tuning, a web notification API and a font inspector. Android users won’t have WebRTC and other upgrades for now, but everyone can experiment with the latest Firefox beta at the source links.

Samsung’s Galaxy S 4 to hit 10 million in sales next week, says CEO JK Shin

Samsung's Galaxy S 4 to hit 10 million in sales next week, says CEO JK Shin

According to co-CEO JK Shin, Samsung’s Galaxy S 4 will soon hit the 10 million mark in sales, less than a month after its debut. That beats the Galaxy S III’s time to that mark by nearly three weeks, making it far and away the company’s quickest seller, ever. The model will also get another push thanks to a stock Android 4.2 version that’ll be available for $649 at Google Play on June 26th. That’s a pretty impressive figure, especially considering its bizarre reveal.

Camouflage your surge protector

Surge protectors are a necessary part of a gadget-lover’s life, but they aren’t the prettiest equipment you own.  I have an ugly gray surge protector peeping out from under my TV cabinet now.  It doesn’t blend in with the shadows under the cabinet, and it certainly doesn’t match my hardwood floors.  It could if I [...]

Mitoza is a fun, freaky Web toy with an artistic look

mitoza

While not a game per se, I found Mitoza intriguing enough to spend quite some time with it. You start off with a seed, and are then presented with two choices: you can either click a flower pot, or click a cute little birdie.

If you click the flower pot, a flower pot appears and the seed is planted inside. You’re then presented with two further choices — a water can or a bottle of fertilizer. Each choice you make causes your creation to morph, and presents you with two other choices.

There’s no winning or losing, really. Each “game” usually lasts around four or five choices, at which point the plant/animal dies in some creative (but not too gruesome) way. At this point you instantly start over with a new seed.

The graphics are captivating; the whole thing has a cinematic feel to it, with a bit of artificial camera shake added for style.

All in all, it’s a fun, peaceful way to spend a few minutes, and it might even make you think a little bit while you’re at it.
